a5c7b9f00b Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler are three scientists at Columbia University in New York City. When their grant expires, the guys are fired and they go into businessa ghost extermination company called "Ghostbusters". Their first customer is orchestra cello player Dana Barrett, who was scared out of her apartment on the 22nd floor of a high rise apartment building on Central Park West. It seems that Dana's neighbor, Louis Tully, is also being affected by the strange happenings in the apartment building. Armed with proton guns, the Ghostbusters become wildly popular, and they are joined by Winston Zeddmore, who is looking for a job with good pay. Overzealous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) agent Walter Peck thinks the Ghostbusters are frauds, and he has the Ghostbusters put in jail. Peck is forced to believe the Ghostbusters when New York City is put under siege by an ancient Sumerian God named Gozer the Gozerian, who is channeled through the apartment building that Dana and Louis live in, and the mayor has no choice but to let the Ghostbusters out of jail to face Gozer. Three odd-ball scientists get kicked out of their cushy positions at a university in New York City where they studied the occult. They decide to set up shop in an old firehouse and become Ghostbusters, trapping pesky ghosts, spirits, haunts, and poltergeists for money. They wise-crack their way through the city, and stumble upon a gateway to another dimension, one which will release untold evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters are called on to save the Big Apple. Just like "Stayin' Alive" or "Mrs. Robinson", Ray Parker Jr.' "Ghost Busters" is one of these instantly identifiable songsthe first four seconds are enough to make you recall the lyrics that go along. Indeed, who doesn't know whom to call if in their neighborhood there's something strange. Ever since 1984, the movie has been a cultural phenomenon and speaking for myself, I learned to draw the iconic logo before I even saw the film.

But let's get back to 1984. There's something very revealing about that year's ten highest- grossing movies, in order: "Ghostbusters", "Beverly Hills Cop", "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", "Gremlins", "The Karate Kid", "Police Academy", "Footloose", "Romancing the Stone", "Star Trek III" and "Splash". Think about it, six comedies, variously overlapping with romance, adventure and horror, but still comedies; only two sequels, and one of them so over-the-top it is funny in it own twisted and politically incorrect way, the rest consists on a musical and a sports underdog film, typical feel-good movies.

Those were the good old days, when the box-office champs weren't made of franchises fillers or heavyset blockbusters, when there was still room for originality, even of uneven quality, when the special effects driven movies didn't take themselves seriously and were more fun to watch than these depressingly square and clinical universes today's directors embark us in. Now that the 80's enter their thirties, we realize how entertaining, imaginative and fun they were. You went to the movies to have a good time.

And if there ever is one film that encapsulates that spirit, it's the story of three outcast parapsychologists with gray uniforms chasing ghosts with a vacuum-like device attached to packers. Of course, it sounds better"Ghost Busters" and much cooler with the logo that became a defining sign of the 80's, one I'll take before any Batman or Superman shield. Seriously, let these guys fight together, I'd rather have a hot-dog stuffed green monster charging at Bill Murray, and sliming him in the process. Forget the truth, justice and the American way, some psychic nuisances and a trio of misunderstood weirdos will do.

And "Ghostbusters" is a movie made by performers who knew what the 80's was about, what the public wanted and it doesn't comea surprise that these guys come from TV. It was a project written by SNL alumni Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd with John Belushi in mind, but his untimely passing entailed many changes in the script. And with gentlemanly class, Ramis and Aykroyd let the lion share of one- liners to Bill Murray, giving him the role his comical legacy needed: a wisecracking scientist named Dr. Peter Venkman, such a constant jerk-ass you can't even tell if HE can tell whether he's serious or not.

Ramis plays Egon Spengler, the egghead and Ayrkyod is Raymond Stantz, the good friend and most emotionally involved of the three. You have the trio made of the mind, the heart and the crazy spirit, and their chemistry is the key to the film's success. They're later joined by Ernie Hudson, who plays Winston Zeddmore, the everyman of the group, and to some extent, the needed 'voice of reason'. A lot has been said about the way Hudson was treated by the film's marketing, but I don't think the race card is to be brandished here. And there's something oddly original in the way a significant character pops up halfway through the narrative.

The film also counts on nice supporting performances. There's Sigourney WeaverDana Barrett, a cellist who's the 'first to call', after witnessing some strange phenomena in her kitchen. There's also a familiar face of the 80's, Rick MoranisLouis Tully, the meek and geeky accountant who's obviously infatuated with his beautiful neighbor. For some reason, she unable to see what he's got to offer, and the eight inches between them don't help. She also doesn't call Venkman's 'romantic' tirades but the ghost storyline finds a smart way to reassemble these two romantic subplots, when Dana is demonically possessed by a spirit.

And Venkman's reactions to her exorcist-like condition proves at least one thing, it takes a lot to shake the guy. And that's the most brilliant aspect about the film, the special effects can satisfy any sucker for horror or Sci-fi movies but the fact that the three players handle itpure routine is a great example of tongue-in-cheek humor and a subtle satire on New York's inner wackiness. After all, where else can you see a TV ad about ghost busting? I also love how the blasé secretary played by Annie Potts doesn't even question their works, and when she asks Winston whether he believe in these things, he tells her that for money, he'd believe anything (I thought there was a waste here for a funnier line but never mind).

Everyone is so crazy that the closest to come to a sane person is the antagonist, an EPA lawyer who had all the reasons not to trust these guys who use radioactive material for their jobs. But only William Atherton, the soon-to-play Thornbug in "Die Hard" could have made himself more unlikable than jerk-ass Bill Murray, and he's the one who by turning off the power that stocked all the taken slime, liberated them and turned New York into the outlet of the most demonic presences, using Dana's buildinga channel. We get then to a climactic showdown, whose special effects might distract from the comedy for a little while, but not too long.

Indeed, the masterstroke comes from the form taken by the evil presence, and this is the stuff iconic movies are made of. "Ghost Busters" isn't without flaws, but they're of such microscopic and negligible nature compared to its iconic magnitude, that the film worksa "Critics Buster" too. Believe it or not I didn't see this movie until tonight. In fact I am watching it right now on TV. This movie is a great comedy and is definitely one of the best comedy films I have ever seen in my life.

Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd are awesome but it's obviously Bill Murray that carries this film. I see after watching it why he is a big star since I've seen him in other movies and they were good but not incredible. Ghost Busters is even better than Stripes which I used to think was his best comedy ever.

The effects don't look great but I imagine that in 1984 when this movie came out they were awesome. They still look good enough after all this time.

If you haven't seen Ghost Busters you should. I saw the second one a few years ago and it wasn't very good which is why I didn't see this until now, the original, but it is a much better movie! Ghostbusters is a hoot. It's Murray's picture, and in a triumph of mind over matter, he blows away the film's boring special effects with his one-liners. Spotting a lusty, totally transformed, fire-breathing Slgourney Weaver, whose body has been overtaken by a spirit, Murray walks past her saying, "That's a new look for you, isn't it?" Thank you, Bill. And don't get outta here, you knucklehead. We like you in this kind of movie. When three parapsychologists—Doctors Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis)—are fired from their positions at New York's Columbia University, they decide to set up shop together and become "ghostbusters" dedicated to trapping ghosts and other nasty spirits. Unfortunately, they're mostly considered to be frauds, until an ancient Sumerian god, Gozer the Gozerian, takes up residence in the high-rise apartment of Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver), and it seems that only the Ghostbusters can save the Big Apple. The script for the motion picture Ghostbusters was written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, who also wrote the sequel Ghostbusters II (1989) (1989). The film has been twice been novelizedGhostbusters (1984) by Larry Milne and againGhostbusters: The Supernatural Spectacular (1985) by Richard Mueller (the movie's popularity also led to two animated television series, The Real Ghost Busters (1986) (later renamed Slimer! And the Real Ghostbusters (1988)) (1986-1991) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997) (1997)wellnumerous computer and video games. A remake/parody, Ghostbusters (2016)—complete with new-character cameos of the original cast—was released in 2016. The Board of Regents decided to terminate their grant on the grounds that their theories were "the worst kind of popular tripe," their methods were "sloppy," their conclusions were "highly questionable," and they are all-around "poor scientists." Venkman in particular was accused of using his position with the Psychology Departmentsome kind of "dodge or hustle." The slime that was found in the library and other places that were haunted by ghosts is described"ectoplasmic residue," a substance that is supposed to exist on the etheric (or spiritual) plane and can remain behind in the wake of a spiritual, i.e., ghostly, manifestation. The story provides no further explanationto why it exists or how it seeps into the realm of the living. Perhaps it signifies amniotic fluid, in that spirits emulate birth when traversing the etheric plane.

It was sold by the jar in toy stores to children. Zuul the Gatekeeper, Gozer the Sumerian god of Destruction, and Vinz Clortho the Keymaster were all made up for the movie. However, following the release of Ghostbusters, fans made up a number of legacies, rituals and mythologies about them, none of which have any true history. The song is "Magic" by Mick Smiley. However, the answer to this question is frequently disputed by those complaining that the start of "Magic"heard on the soundtrack album sounds nothing like the track used in the film. This is because the film uses only the second half of the song, which sounds much different from the first half. Start playing the track at about 2:20 in to hear itit was in the film. Gozer gave the Ghostbusters a choice of the form Gozer will become"The Destroyer". If The Ghostbusters thought and had chosen for example: The Joker from Batman, Gozer would reappear in that form to destroy them. The Ghostbusters had to clear their minds and not think of anything or anyone that would appear and destroy them. But Ray had thought of the Mr. Stay Puft Marshmellow Man and Gozer reappearedthe form chosen by Ray, which Ray believed couldn't possibly destroy them, kids would toast marshmellows at camp fires and The Ghostbusters used their proton packs to zap at Mr. Stay Puft/Gozer and set Mr. Stay Puft/Gozer on fire. Ray's remark to Louis in the movie is "You have been a participant in the biggest interdimensional cross rip since the Tunguska blast of 1909!" First, the writers got the year wrong; the event occurred on June 30th, 1908. Ray's talking about a possible meteor strike in southern Central Russia that had a huge blast area. More info can be read here. After climbing up the 22 flights to the penthouse and going out on the roof, the Ghostbusters find that Dana (Sigourney Weaver) and Louis (Rick Moranis) have been transformed into Zuul and Vinz Clortho, two huge demonic dogs guarding Gozer's gateway. Slowly, Gozer comes sauntering through the gate. Ray orders her to stop all supernatural activity and return to her own realm. Gozer asks him if he is a god, and Ray stupidly replies, "No," so Gozer tosses all four of them across the roof, almost knocking them off the ledge. The Ghostbusters neutralize her with their proton packs, and Gozer disappears, but her voice can be heard ordering them to choose the form she is to take in order to destroy the world. Everyone tries to clear their minds, but an image of the Stay Puft marshmallow man pops into Ray's head. In that giant form, the Traveler comes walking down the street, laying wreck to everything around her. Egon suggests that they may be able to close the gate by zapping it with their proton packs and allowing the particle streams to cross. The plan is successful, Mr Stay Puft is reduced to great gobs of melted marshmallow crème, and Dana and Louis are released from their dog bodies. In the final scenes, the Ghostbusters emerge from the building to the cheers of the crowd, Dana kisses Venkman, and they all drive off in Ecto 1. For the UK television release, approximately six scenes were shortened and swearwords removed.
